Fibre Optics

Electro_Optic materials and components

Polishing optical fibres involves a great deal of precision cutting, lapping and polishing, all of which are achieved through the use of Logitech systems. Two areas in which Logitech systems are commonly used are Standford Couplers and Fibre Arrays or single/multi fibre assemblies.

Polished Block Optic Couplers, routinely used in the production of tunable fibre couplers, fibre polarisers, field amplifiers and a wide variety of other optical components, presents the most difficult of fibre polishing applications and require an unusually high degree of geometric control.

Logitech has developed a system which fully meets the requirements of this demanding application. Logitech systems can be provided for the polishing of fibre arrays or single/multiple optical fibres to be used in the expanding telecommunications, MEMS and internet markets. The required fibre geometry is achieved during the lapping stage, which allows the preparation of high quality optical surfaces at the polishing stage.

Optical fibres are mounted into recesses cut in support blocks of fused silica and then polished some way through the fibre to generate an interface for mating with another fibre / support block assembly. The precision with which the fibres are polished is critical, as the distance between the polished surface and the core region of the fibre is an important parameter in the behaviour of the final component.
